The department begins
রাজশাহী কলেজ প্রথম শ্রেণির মর্যাদা পাওয়ার সাথে সাথেই মাত্র ২ জন নিবেদিতপ্রাণ গণিতসাধক শিক্ষককে নিয়ে গণিত বিভাগের ঐতিহাসিক যাত্রা শুরু হয়। এটি ছিল এই অঞ্চলে আধুনিক বিজ্ঞান ও গণিত চর্চার ভিত্তিপ্রস্তর।
The moment Rajshahi College attained first-class status, the Department of Mathematics began its journey with just two dedicated teachers of the subject. It was the foundation stone of modern science and mathematics in this region.

Background: intermediate and degree courses
১৮৭৩ সালে রাজা হারালাল রায় বাহাদুরের সহায়তায় ইন্টারমিডিয়েট এবং ১৮৭৭ সালে দিঘাপতিয়ার রাজা প্রমোদনাথ রায় বাহাদুরের অনুদানে কলেজে ডিগ্রি কোর্স চালুর অনুমোদন লাভ করে।
In 1873, with the help of Raja Haralal Roy Bahadur, the college began intermediate teaching. In 1877 a grant from Raja Promodanath Roy Bahadur of Dighapatia won approval for degree courses.

Honours introduced
উত্তরবঙ্গে উচ্চতর গণিত চর্চাকে ছড়িয়ে দিতে গণিত বিভাগে প্রথমবারের মতো ৩ বছর মেয়াদী অনার্স (সম্মান) কোর্স চালু করা হয়, যা বিভাগে মেধা চর্চার নতুন দিগন্ত উন্মোচন করে।
To carry advanced mathematics through northern Bengal, a three-year honours course was introduced in the department for the first time, opening a new horizon for serious study.

Background: the B.L. course and the first buildings
১৮৮৩ সালে আইন বিষয়ে বি.এল. কোর্স চালু হয়। ১৮৮৪ সালে মূল কলেজ ভবন এবং ১৮৮৮ সালে দানবীর হাজী মোহাম্মদ মোহসিনের অনুদানে গ্যালারি ভবন নির্মিত হয়।
The B.L. course in law began in 1883. The main college building followed in 1884, and in 1888 the gallery building was raised on a grant from the philanthropist Haji Mohammad Mohsin.

Masters introduced
অনার্স চালুর ঠিক এক দশকের মাথায় গণিত বিভাগে মাস্টার্স (স্নাতকোত্তর) প্রোগ্রাম শুরু হয়। এর মাধ্যমে বিভাগটি পূর্ণাঙ্গ স্নাতকোত্তর গবেষণা ও উচ্চশিক্ষার কেন্দ্রে পরিণত হয়।
A decade after honours began, the department opened its masters programme, becoming a full centre of postgraduate research and higher study.

Background: hostels and the science buildings
১৮৯৪ সালে প্রথম পি.এন. হোস্টেল, ১৯০২ সালে হেমন্তকুমারী হোস্টেল, ১৯০৪ সালে সংস্কৃত কলেজ, ১৯০৯ সালে ফুলার হোস্টেল এবং ১৯১৫ সালে পদার্থবিজ্ঞান ভবন নির্মিত হয়।
P.N. Hostel came first in 1894, then Hemantakumari Hostel in 1902, the Sanskrit College in 1904, Fuller Hostel in 1909, and the physics building in 1915.

The faculty widens
বিংশ শতাব্দীর শুরুতে শিক্ষার্থীর সংখ্যা ও একাডেমিক ব্যাপ্তি বাড়ায় গণিত বিভাগের শিক্ষক পদসংখ্যা বাড়িয়ে ৪ জনে (২ জন অধ্যাপক ও ২ জন প্রভাষক) উন্নীত করা হয়, যা মানসম্মত গণিত শিক্ষার ভিত মজবুত করে।
As student numbers and academic range grew early in the twentieth century, the department was raised to four teaching posts — two professors and two lecturers — strengthening the foundation of a rigorous mathematics education.

১৯৩১ সালে নারী শিক্ষার্থী ভর্তি, ১৯৫২ সালে ক্যাম্পাসে প্রথম ভাষা শহীদ স্মৃতিস্তম্ভ নির্মাণ, ১৯৫৩ সালে রাবি অধিভুক্তি এবং ১৯৭১ সালের মুক্তিযুদ্ধে শিক্ষক-শিক্ষার্থীদের বীরত্বপূর্ণ অবদান।
Women were admitted in 1931. The first Language Martyrs' memorial on any campus was raised here in 1952, affiliation to Rajshahi University followed in 1953, and teachers and students alike gave courageous service in the Liberation War of 1971.

After the National University was established, regular masters teaching was approved once again in 1994.

RCMAA is formed, and Math Nexus — Reunion 2026
২৮ ফেব্রুয়ারি ২০২৬ তারিখে Rajshahi College Mathematics Alumni Association (RCMAA) আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে আত্মপ্রকাশ করে। এরই ধারাবাহিকতায় সকল প্রজন্মের গণিতবিদ ও শিক্ষার্থীদের এক ছাতার নিচে আনতে 'Math Nexus – Reunion 2026'-এর ঐতিহাসিক উদ্যোগ গ্রহণ করা হয়।
On 28 February 2026 the Rajshahi College Mathematics Alumni Association was formally constituted. From it came the historic undertaking of Math Nexus — Reunion 2026, to bring mathematicians and students of every generation under one roof.
